Hair rinse, stain, wash?

so i've never died my hair before and so i think i'm gonna take it slow by starting with a rinse. right now my hairs like a dark brown and when i stand in the sun its light brownish/reddish. i wanna die the underneath half of my hair an auburn reddish color. would it show up? and how much do these rinse, stain things cost ?Hair rinse, stain, wash?
